Let's consider the Illinois Tollway System. When they started pitching the tollways to the taxpayers many years ago, they said that, as soon as the 20 year bonds that financed the tollways were paid off, the tollways would be free. That was 50 or more years ago. Have you seen any free tollways? When you buy gasoline, a huge amount of the price is taxes. State taxes. County taxes, City taxes, etc. There is also a "road and bridge tax" that the state collects to use to fix our roads and bridges. The politicians said that this would insure that our roads and bridges will be maintained. Ain't happening. The politicians use much of that money for other things. To address this, the voters of Illinois approved an amendment to the state constitution several years ago requiring the state to actually use the road and bridge taxes for roads and bridges. But they ignore it. The politicians still divert much of the road and bridge tax money and use it for everything but roads and bridges. But what about Cook County and Will County. Which county would you rather live in? Cook County has beautiful Lake Michigan. Cook County also has the largest number of murders in the country every year. Also, lots of car jackings, muggings and other nasty things. Will County has the Sanitary & Ship canal that runs through Joliet. It's not much to look at. And it's not very sanitary either, especially after a big rain in Chicago. But, the housing is cheaper in Will County and the crime is a fraction of what it is in Chicago.
