The business, owned by Ken and Kim Porter, has membership in two chambers of commerce and will host a ribbon cutting Nov. 22 with the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and another with the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 29. The franchise officially opened Nov. 7, but the legwork for the opening began in October of this year. The Porters, Ken with a background in maintenance, and Kim, a former Ace Hardware. Corporation marketing team member, decided to bring their experience together with this business venture. "I used to work for Ace Hardware Corporation and have love for the Ace brand-they deliver on their brand promise," Kim said. The business is part of the Ace Hardware family. but a separate business unit. They employ craftsman to perform up to one-day handyman jobs in a service area that covers Minooka/ Channahon, Shorewood, Plainfield, southern Naperville and portions of Joliet. This unique business caters to clients who want small jobs done, with an array of services such as hanging light fixtures or ceiling fans, patching and painting a wall or replacing a sink, and during the holidays, hanging Christmas lights. Clients can go online to set up a time for services, Kim said the client can choose up to three times and the office manager will work the job into the schedule and contact the client. The craftsman will call the night before to introduce themselves and verify the service, show up at the specific time of arrival (not a time window) assess the scope of the work, purchase materials and return to work. Kim said clients can purchase their own materials, but materials purchased through Ace Handyman Services come with a parts and labor warranty for the next year. Clients pay an hourly rate for work-a flat fee-- Kim said. Kim said the bonded and insured craftsman employees, not contractors, will also communicate with the client of any findings that need attention, "We will never ignore another potential repair."
