Someone You Should Know Neil Carson is 33rd Degree Mason, Sovereign Grand Inspector General, and founding father of Marquette-Joliet Consistory #104. He joined the Western Consistory #28 of the Valley of Chicago in 1967 under the guidance of Oscar Edmond, who was the general chairman of the Grand Lodge Committee in 1972 and is known as a legendary and remarkable member of the Scottish Rite. Carson served as Worshipful Master from 1972 until 1973, when he was then appointed District Deputy Grand Master for the Grand Lodge in Illinois. After the establishment of Marquette-Joliet Consistory #104, which expanded of the Orient of Illinois, Carson was crowned Grand Inspector General by the United Supreme Council in 1985. In describing his approach and responsibility to the Rite, he states, "I observe and correct because character is an important trait in Freemasonry in general but in the Scottish Rite in particular. For anyone who wishes to join us, they need to understand that these traits are common in Scottish Rite Masons. If you work diligently and advance, you may be selected for the thirty third Degree, but the numbers are not as important as the character of the man that you are". As Carson continues to exemplify the strength and character of Scottish Rite Masons, he lists several memorable experiences. "Starting the Consistory was definitely one. Also, being elevated to the 33rd Degree. I was an honorary member for 16 years before being elevated to a Sovereign Grand Inspector General in 2001. When Illustrious Brian L. Abrams was the Deputy for the Orient of Illinois, I joined him on two visits to Consistories in Germany. I enjoyed it the first time and had to do it again. One of the most memorable is being elevated to the Active Grade in 2020. The work to get the Consistory started is the most memorable of all". These accomplishments in addition to all his other achievements for the Scottish Rite are feats worthy of recognition.
