Owner Letesha Turner-Houston said, "My salon is like no other salon-it's a one stop shop. I haven't seen other salons in Joliet with all of this, we are a luxury salon." Turner-Houston, married with three children was in the medical field for 11 years. When her son was diagnosed with Autism, she knew she needed to have a more flexible schedule, so self-employment was an option she explored. She began a mink lash business and gradually began make-up and waxing services out of her home or as a pop-up business in other local salons. Just as she got into a groove and her client list increased, the pandemic hit. "My husband told me that people still want to look good even though they are not going anywhere," Turner-Houston said. She advertised on Facebook and through word of mouth and scheduled lash, makeup and wax appointments in her home in hour intervals to avoid clients being around one another, the goal to work for herself motivated her to keep up her business, even though the odds for success of small business dwindled during the pandemic. As the state opened up, her husband encouraged her to open her own business out of the home. Turner-Houston said she decided to take her talents and open a salon with other services for a one stop salon, and as Joliet "I'm young. 30, I want to give people hope, you can do anything. I can make my own schedule, be more present with my children as a married mother of three. I have given an opportunity to the women in my salon, they also have children and this gives them a way to do something they love, it's never work when you do something you love," Turner-Houston said. As a Joliet native, Turner-Houston wants to assist other small businesses, just as others gave her space for her lash business when she first began. Most Sundays, the salon hosts pop-up shops for local business to sell from 3 to 6 p.m. The next pop-ups will be July 25 and Aug, 8. Turner-Houston also wants to give back to her community. The salon will host a back- to-school event, date to be determined, but she said it will include a giveaway of school supplies for children.
